Outbound Email Issues

Background

Please note that in an effort to curb the proliferation of spam, many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) prevent the relaying of outbound mail to servers outside of their network. What does this mean for you? Well for one it means less spam, but it also means that you won’t be able to use our mail servers for your outbound email.

Instructions for Alternate Outbound SMTP Mail Configuration

The difficulties you are experiencing are resolved by configuring your mail application to use your Internet Service Provider’s mail server for outbound mail, and our Webnames.ca mail server (e.g. mail.yourdomainname.ca) for inbound email. This configuration will work with most providers, and your recipients will still see your email coming from you@yourdomainname.ca If are receiving a 550 error, or are otherwise having trouble sending emails, please refer to the information below for the outbound mail server settings for many of the common Internet Service Providers in Canada.

If your provider is not listed below, please refer to their website for the correct outbound mail server settings.

Bell Canada

Outgoing Mail server: smtphm.sympatico.ca
Port: 25, or 587 if 25 does not work.
Authentication: Password Authentication
Username: username@sympatico.ca (Your full sympatico email address. If you do not have a Sympatico address, you will need to call Sympatico and request one.)
